Fish curry

Ingredients

  • Ingredients for frying fish :-
  • ½ kilo of fish
  • ½ tsp of black pepper crushed
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ tsp of thyme/ajwain seeds grounded into powder
  • Oil to fry
  • Ingredients for the gravy of fish curry :-
  • 2 medium sized onions sliced
  • Half a cup sunflower or vegetable
  • 1 tsp of mustard seed oil
  • Handful of fresh curry leaves
  • 1 cup of tomato paste
  • 1 tsp of coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp of ginger /garlic paste
  • 1 tsp of dried fenugreek leaves
  • ¼ cup of tamarind paste
  • 2 tsp of green chilli paste or finely chopped
  • Salt to taste

Method

Step 1

Method for frying fish:- Marinate the fish with the above ingredients and leave the fish to absorb flavours for at least 30 minutes to an hour and then fry individual fish pieces. Drain excess oil.

Step 2

For Gravy:- Heat mustard oil in a pot, and then add in vegetable oil. Put onions and fry them till golden brown. Add in curry leaves and mustard seeds till the mustard seeds start crackling. Add in tomatoes and the rest of the ingredients in the pot and let them cook till oil separates from the gravy and the gravy turns a bit darker in colour. Now add 1 cup of water and put in the fish, let it simmer for 5 -10 minutes. Avoid stirring at this stage. Serve with rice.
