Black lentils

Ingredients

  • ½ a cup of black lentils
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 tsp of red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp of turmeric (optional)
  • ½ onion cut into small cubes
  • 2 tbsp of tamarind paste
  • 2 tbsp of finely chopped tomatoes
  • Salt to taste
  • For tarka/tempering:-
  • Oil 3 tbsp
  • Garlic 5 cloves finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp mustard seeds
  • 10 fresh curry leaves
  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds

Method

Step 1

Take a pot fill it with four cups of water and boil it, add in washed black lentils, turmeric, red chilli powder, onions, salt, finely chopped tomatoes, onion and cook them on a low flame for 20 minutes or till the daal/lentils softens. Stir well or whisk the lentils add the tamarind concentrate paste at the end.

Step 2

Tarka /tempering:- Heat oil in a frying pan, now add mustard seeds, curry leaves, garlic stir it and fry till garlic is golden brown, remove from heat pour it over the black lentils, and serve with plain rice.
